Allen Neighborhood Center has two openings for AmeriCorps VISTAS (Volunteers in Service to America). These positions will begin in mid-November, though selection will take place by October 1. Resumes should be dropped off at the Center or sent via email to Joan Nelson at joann@allenneighborhoodcenter.org by Thursday, September 24.
Our VISTA workers will enjoy a rich set of experiences working in this lively community, while learning the fundamentals of community development and neighborhood revitalization. Projects in which our new VISTAs will be working include:
- Outreach and Engagement
- Engage neighbors, via door-to-door canvassing and at the Center, and link them with organized groups, programs, services and resources.
- Provide technical assistance and support to organized and emerging neighborhood groups working on neighborhood improvement initiatives (e.g., food security, beautification, energy efficient homes, health, etc.)
- Food and Health
- Assist our Market Manager with all aspects of the Allen Street Farmers Market, Community Soup, and other food- and health-related programs.
- Volunteer Recruitment and Management
- Coordinate volunteer recruitment and training for all of ANC’s programs (Farmers Market, Youth Service Corps, Hunter Park GardenHouse, etc.)
These positions are full-time, and pay approximately $750.00/month, plus benefits (Note: VISTA is known as the ‘domestic Peace Corps’—providing rich experiences, not riches). VISTA workers also receive a cash award of $1200 at the end of the year of service, or if they prefer, a $4750 educational stipend that can be applied toward education or a student loan. Health insurance is provided.
Candidates interested in ‘healthy community-building’, community organizing, or neighborhood-based education will find much to excite them here. Folks with solid ‘people skills’, energy and enthusiasm, good written and verbal communication skills, and computer skills are especially welcome. Familiarity with the Eastside is helpful. Extensive training and mentorships are absolutely guaranteed. A one-year commitment is requested.
Call Joan Nelson at (517) 999-3912 for further information; or email her at joann@allenneighborhoodcenter.org. Once again, to be considered for this position, please send your resume to 1619 E. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI 48912 no later than September 24, 2009.
Thank You!
