Urban Gardener Certification Course

A unique learning opportunity developed by Allen Neighborhood Center and the Ingham County Master Gardener

The Urban Gardener Certification Course features nine sessions of instruction in basic yard gardening, appropriate for high density, small lot neighborhoods such as those found throughout the Lansing area.  Topics to be covered include  basic plant and soil science, seeding, potting up, watering skill development, vegetables basics, organic growing and production tips, small group garden design, composting (hot piles, worms, etc.), urban native plant gardens, rain gardens, greenhouse vs outdoor gardening, and sustainable lawns.  Classes begin on September 29 so call soon to reserve a spot.

Dates:  Tuesdays, 6:30-9:00 pm; September 29th through November 3rd, for the first six sessions.  Three ‘continuing ed’ workshops will be offered in the weeks following completion of these six sessions.

Location:  Hunter Park Community GardenHouse (located in the 1400 block of East Kalamazoo) OR at the Allen Neighborhood Center.

Instructors :  Primary instructors are GardenHouse staff, K’Anna Burton and Linda Anderson; Gary Heilig, MSU Extension Master Gardener Coordinator and Matt Smar, DEQ & local native plants gardener.

Cost:  $20-$40 and volunteer service at the GardenHouse of 40 hours over one year
