Current Volunteer Opportunities

Neighborhood Navigator: The Neighborhood Navigator, a friendly greeter who is trained to link visitors to a wide range of community resources, is one of the most important volunteer positions at ANC. We are seeking engaging people who enjoy a fast pace and a diverse work environment. Continual and free trainings are given each month in order to increase knowledge about community resources. We ask that volunteers make a commitment of at least 4 months. The following shifts are currently open- Monday- Friday; 9am-1pm and 1pm- 5pm.website pic 2

GardenHouse Crew: Support ANC’s urban gardening initiative at the GardenHouse. Help create a ‘growing culture’ here on the Eastside. Volunteers will help GardenHouse staff with tasks around the GardenHouse.

Newsletter Support: Allen Neighborhood Center publishes a monthly newsletter with a distribution of 3,500 copies. The newsletter    provides timely and relevant news and information to 3500 residents every other month. Volunteers are needed to help fold and distribute the newsletter and prepare newsletters for mailing.

Youth Service Corps Volunteer Recruiter: Youth Service Corps Volunteer Recruiter work with the YSC staff and Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting neighborhood kids (11-17) for the Youth Service Corps. Volunteers should have experience with public speaking and working with kids. YSC members provide services including chore assistance to seniors and others, delivering newsletters throughout the neighborhood, as well as assisting other service organizations with activities that serve the neighborhood.  Adult volunteers supervise and work with youth members.Website pic 3

Volunteer with Community Soup: Community Soup takes place on the 3rd Thursday of every month. It’s great to cook with others and even more fun to sit down and enjoy the 4-6 dishes that have been prepared by all. We are looking for a friendly committed person who enjoys working with people and food. Volunteers do not have to have experience working with food. Volunteers would help prep before the event (recipe selection, copying recipes, etc.), set-up, assist participants and staff during the event and clean-up once the event is over. Volunteers are asked to make a 3 month commitment.

Kinship Care Support Group Volunteer: The purpose of the Kinship program is to provide a monthly educational and supportive gathering for relatives that are raising another family member. Volunteers help set up for the gathering, watch over children, and take minutes.

Outreach and Engagement Internships- Summer 2010: Interns will assist in community organizing within the local neighborhood and identifying residents in need of center-based and local resources. They will provide information and referrals to community programs and follow-up to makes sure that residents get what they need. They will learn eligibility and the application process for the Ingham Health Plan, Medicaid/Food Stamps, the Lansing Food Bank, and local housing resources. O&E Summer Internship Description
