5) St. Vincent Catholic Charities In Need of Blankets
St. Vincent Catholic Charities (STVCC) is currently in great need of blankets for the refugee and local homeless population we serve. With the cold winter months coming, we need to ensure that children, families and adults can keep warm. When you make a donation to St. Vincent Catholic Charities the items go directly to helping people in need. STVCC does not resell any items donated.

As part of our mission, St. Vincent Catholic Charities helps children, families and adults, who are living in crisis, find safety so they may begin to thrive. In order to first move from at risk to safety people need to have a safe home setting so they can focus on development in other areas of life. STVCC provides transitional housing and the basic household needs to help families and individuals gain that safety in order to move to thriving. Donated items are tax deductible.

“We deeply appreciate the compassion and support of our community. We are able to serve those in need because of the strength and faith of our neighbors,” said Andrea E. Seyka, CEO for St. Vincent Catholic Services.

STVCC is in great need of housing items from blankets, to coats and gloves, with the greatest need being blankets. Other donated items needed year round include basic housing setup items: Tables, beds, chairs, dishes, pots & pans, silverware, curtains, kitchen ware, etc. All items can be dropped off at STVCC Campus located on north Lansing: St. Vincent Catholic Charities, 2800 W. Willow, Lansing, MI 48917. Or pick up may be arranged: Contact: 517-323-4734 ext. 1050 and leave a voicemail with your information.

3) Veterans’ Day is this Wednesday, November 11, and though we can never truly repay the sacrifice and service that our brave men and women in uniform have made in defense of our nation and our ideals, I’m happy to announce two events this weekend in honor of our veterans.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the City of Lansing will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at the Don Johnson Field House at Lansing Eastern High School, 200 N. Pennsylvania. Doors open at 9 a.m. and the program begins at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, Nov. 8, the Michigan Historical Museum will honor veterans with a special tribute at their Veterans Celebration. The event will include speakers from the Michigan Army National Guard, Delta Company Air Unit, which is located in Grand Ledge. Mike Beck, whose recent tour in Afghanistan was part of his 27-year service record. The event will begin at 2 p.m. at the Michigan Historical Museum, 702 W. Kalamazoo St. in Lansing.

In honor of our veterans, please take some time these next few days to consider their service and what it means to you. To our veterans: thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you’ve done for us. I’d also like to extend a special thank you to a very important man in my life: my father, Ted Bauer, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Knight Foundation, the three-year effort measures the emotional factors that make people passionate about – and loyal to – their communities. Check it out: http://www.soulofthecommunity.org/2009/09/3-magic-ingredients/
11) DESIGN LANSING Community Character Workshop
HELP TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF OUR CITY!
Sponsored by the City of Lansing Planning and Neighborhood Development Department,
Do you care about how Lansing’s natural features, buildings and public spaces, including streets, relate to one another to create neighborhoods, districts and a city where people want to live, work and spend their leisure time? If you do, you should plan to attend the initial city-wide Community Character Workshop for Design Lansing, the first comprehensive update to the city’s master plan since 1990. The meeting is scheduled for:

Thursday October 29 at the Lansing Center, rooms 203-205 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.
This workshop on community character will give Lansing citizens and property owners an opportunity to learn about the factors that shape the physical form of the community and the principles for creating a quality of life that attracts and retains residents and businesses. Participants will also be asked to “vote” their preferences on different approaches for transforming some of the areas that now detract from Lansing’s appeal using hand held electronic devices that allow results to be reported immediately. The voting results will be used to help shape strategies for the future of Lansing as the planning process unfolds over the next 9-12 months. The purpose of the master plan update is to establish objectives and policies to guide Lansing’s future growth and development. It will:

Identify issues and opportunities as the basis for decision-making
Clarify and gain consensus on future goals and objectives
Establish policies to manage change and guide decisions about future land use and development
Provide the foundation for setting capital improvement priorities, revising zoning regulations and developing other implementation tools

12) Houses and Apartments (Housing opportunities identified in Active Neighboring are managed or sold by landlords and realtors who share our commitment to well-maintained and affordable housing and healthy, safe, and diverse neighborhoods.)

Invitation from Nancy Mahlow, ENO President

Please join me and the rest of our organization in a “meet and greet” and Q/A session with our candidates for office. This is an opportunity to speak with the candidates and ask those important questions to see just how they plan to build our city and schools. We are trying to obtain City TV to tape this event for future airing.

If you would like to submit a question or two because you might be “shy” or simply can’t make the event, feel free to send them to me and I will compile them for the moderator. I look forward to seeing you and please share with others. Remember it is your right to vote!

Hello this is Derrell Edward Slaughter, Lansing Director of Greenation. I would like to make you aware of an exciting new initiative that our youth division is undertaking. We have developed a recycling program that will work to reduce the amount of technological waste in the greater Lansing area. We are asking for you and others to donate any old cell phones or ink cartridges to the program. All proceeds will go to the funding of future Greenation youth initiatives.

The program will formally kick off Oct. 10 from 10 AM to 2:30PM at the Lansing Convention Center. The day will begin with a door to door collection of recyclables and end with a launch party for everybody to partake in. It is suggested that all party participants bring either bring old cell phones or ink cartridges in support of the Greenation Youth Recycling Program. Radio station FM 96.5 will be present at the luncheon to provide participants with prizes and entertainment. This launch will be in conjunction with the 2009 Michigan Powershift Conference. This conference will bring college students from all over Michigan to learn and actively engage in the green movement. Please feel free to contact me with any question about the event. We hope that you will assist Greenation in its mission of creating a sustainable society of all!

This meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 30 from 7-9 p.m. at Foster Community Center, 200 N.
3) Recycle Seasonal Gardening and Landscaping Pots & Trays The Regional Recycling Coordinating Committee (R2C2) and Van Atta’s Greenhouse is pleased to announce a special collection event to recycle pots and trays generated from seasonal gardening and landscaping activities. The event will be held at Van Atta’s Greenhouse (9008 Old M 78 Haslett 48840) on September 30th from Noon to 6:00 p.m. All types and sizes of plastic potting containers will be accepted including flats, plug trays and cell packs. All items may not be stamped with a recycling symbol on the bottom. However the following types of plastics are accepted: #2 HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), #5 PP (Polypropylene), and #6 PS (Polystyrene).
Residents from throughout the region are encouraged to participate. It is very important to prepare materials correctly. Items should be free of dirt and debris and rinsed if possible. Items should be stacked according to size, type of container and according to the number located on the bottom of the container. Please note, not all containers are stamped with a number, but are acceptable, as in the case of flats, shuttle trays, cell packs and plug trays.
It will take quite a bit of effort to package items for transport to be recycled. Residents are strongly encouraged to follow collection guidelines or material can not be accepted. For more information contact the Clinton County Department of Waste Management at waste@clinton-county.org or 989-224-5186.

“…And thorough work, again, renders sufficient, the smallest quantity of ground to each man. And this again, conforms to what must occur in a world less inclined to wars, and more devoted to the arts of peace, than heretofore. Population must increase rapidly — more rapidly than in former times — and ere long the most valuable of all arts, will be the art of deriving a comfortable subsistence from the smallest area of soil. No community whose every member possesses this art, can ever be the victim of oppression of any of its forms. Such community will be alike independent of crowned-kings, money-kings, and
land-kings….”

These positions are full-time, and pay approximately $750.00/month, plus benefits (Note: VISTA is known as the ‘domestic Peace Corps’—providing rich experiences, not riches). VISTA workers also receive a cash award of $1200 at the end of the year of service, or if they prefer, a $4750 educational stipend that can be applied toward education or a student loan. Health insurance is provided.

Candidates interested in ‘healthy community-building’, community organizing, or neighborhood-based education will find much to excite them here. Folks with solid ‘people skills’, energy and enthusiasm, good written and verbal communication skills, and computer skills are especially welcome. Familiarity with the Eastside is helpful. Extensive training and mentorships are absolutely guaranteed. A one-year commitment is requested.

Call Joan Nelson at (517) 999-3912 for further information; or email her at joann@allenneighborhoodcenter.org.
