Some cool facts about
weatherization and energy efficiency…
Did you know that according to the Department of Energy,
weatherizing your home can reduce heating bills by up to 31% and overall
energy bills by $358 a year at current prices?
And, if every American home replaced
just one regular light bulb with an ENERGY STAR
compact fluorescent bulb, we would save enough energy to light more
than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent
to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.
Here are some more
interesting facts:
Using compact fluorescent energy efficient
light bulbs (cfl’s) can save over $30
in energy costs over the life of the bulb.
A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home during
set periods of time throughout the week. Through proper use of pre-programmed
settings, a programmable thermostat can save you about $100 every year
in energy costs.
What you can do:
Making your home more energy efficient
can be as easy as sealing up those drafty windows, changing a few light
bulbs, and turning off the lights when you are not using them. If you
would like to learn the basics of making your home energy efficient
(e.g., sealing, caulking, insulating. and much more) then we have an
opportunity for you!
Allen Neighborhood Center, in collaboration
with Urban Options (www.urbanoptions.org),
is offering a free seminar on “How to Achieve Energy Savings”.
When is the
“How to Achieve Energy Savings” Seminar?
The seminar will be on Thursday February
15th from 6-8:00 pm at Foster Community Center. To sign up, please
contact Jason Weller at 367-2468 Ext 2004, or via email at jasonw@allenneighborhoodcenter.org. Space is limited so please sign up early.
Free energy-saving items will be given
away by Urban Options and the Lansing Board of Water & Light!
Please consider become
an Energy Champion on the East Side
We will be asking training participants
to consider taking this one step further and becoming energy champions
of their block. As an energy champion, you'll get to participate in a second
more comprehensive workshop to equip you with some basic installation
skills. You would then become an “energy volunteer” for your
immediate neighborhood and from time to time the Allen Neighborhood
Center would contact you and ask if you would be willing to help a close
neighbor with making their home more efficient. It would be something
basic such as installing door weatherstripping, plastic window kits,
changing hard to reach light bulbs, or helping install band joist insulation.
We will not release your name or contact information, and you can volunteer
to help out on as many jobs (or as few) as you like.
