Our chives smell sweet and taste great!

Garden 2010

Each spring the Youth Service Corps plants lots of veggies to grow in its indoor and outdoor gardens. Some plants are in place from last year, such as the strawberries

Our sweet strawberries are coming in.

and chives, and others need to be seeded inside the GardenHouse and thenplanted outdoors once the threat of frost is gone for the year.

YSC members dig into the dirt and do all of the seeding and maintenance on their plants, including the watering, transplanting, and of course – the eating! : ) This year we are planting everything from tomatoes to potatoes to snap peas. If you are 11 to 17 years old and want to join the YSC, please contact us! We would love to share this wonderful experience with you!

Are you age 11-17 and interested in helping your community grow?  If so, Allen Neighborhood Center’s Youth Service Corps (YSC) needs you!

The mission of the YSC is to provide safe, enriching after school and summer activities for Eastside youth where they can make friends and learn job and life skills while serving their community.

YSC meets 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the summer.  We gather at the Hunter Park GardenHouse to devise and work on service projects such as litter patrol in Hunter Park and snow shoveling during winter months.

We also supervise and support new gardeners in getting started with our Garden-In-A-Box program. The GIAB program, previously grant funded, allows novice, disabled and low income people on Lansing’s Eastside an opportunity to learn to grow their own vegetables with an on-loan box provided by the Youth Service Corps. Currently, 47 boxholders are in various stages of gaining gardening experience.

Members of the YSC proudly pose with their hand wind socks. These wind socks are one way we fundraise to send kids to Peace Jam each year.

YSC grows healthy fruits and vegetables in the Hunter Park Garden House, and in our outdoor garden three seasons of the year. YSC members get hands on gardening experience, and get to take some of the bounty home, too! We also some of our produce at the Allen Street Farmers Market to assist with program costs.

In addition, youth work on Peace Jam curriculum September through April (www.peacejam.org).  YSC studies a designated Nobel Peace Laureate each school year, and explores ways to address the roots of violence to create a more peaceful community and planet.  This work culminates each Spring when some YSC members attend the Great Lakes Peace Jam conference in Kalamazoo and meet a Nobel Peace Laureate. Recent Nobel Laureates the YSC has met include Jody Williams, Betty Williams, and Shirin Abadi.

YSC knows how to play too! At each session, we spend time playing games, tossing the frisbee (or two), and sharing a snack together as we get ready for the day’s agenda.

We also take special field trips and have parties for occasions ranging from Earth Day to Cinco de Mayo as an expression of our gratitude for the service our members provide.  Among venues we visit are Uncle John’s Cider Mill, East Lansing Aquatic Center and Wharton Center for the Performing Arts.
